Three Central AC Noises And What They Mean

Tammy Terry

If you're like most people, you're familiar with certain sounds that your vehicle makes when things aren't right, but you may be surprised that noises from your central AC unit sometimes parallel their automotive counterparts. Following are three sounds that central AC units make that you may have heard at some point in your car.

Squealing

If the fan belt has ever come loose or worn out in your car, this sound will be very familiar to you—and it's caused by the same type of situation. Fan belts in central air units can become misaligned in the same way as those in vehicles, and the sound is virtually identical. The good news is that you'll be able to keep running your AC in the event that this happens, so you won't be left without it during the middle of a heat wave. The bad news, however, is that the fan can break at any time, and if this happens, you will be left without heat during the middle of a heat wave. It's best to hedge your bets and get it repaired as soon as possible—keep in mind that because AC units work harder during periods of high seasonal temperatures, fan belts and other components are more likely to malfunction when it's hot.

Clicking

If you've ever tried to start a car with a battery that is on the verge of giving up the ghost or with one that is already dead, you're probably familiar with that ominous clicking sound that happens when you turn the key in the ignition. That same type of clicking sound coming from your central AC accompanied by a failure to perform is also quite likely to be the result of an electrical issue. In AC units, this is usually the result of electrical components timing out.

Rattling

Just like with car motors, rattling sounds coming from your central AC are possible indications of a wide variety of problems. Always look for the simplest answer first and check the fans for any sign of a foreign object that may be obstructing their movement. If that doesn't turn out to be the case, make certain that all the interior and exterior hardware components on the motor of your AC, as well as those on its exterior compressor unit, are tightly attached. If these don't do the trick, it's time to call the central air conditioner repair service near you for assistance.

Talking About Air Filtration Systems

Hey everyone, I am Mort Nicholas. Since I have allergies to pollen, dust and chemicals, I must filter the air blowing through my home day and night. The air filtration systems hook straight to the furnace and air conditioner to provide my home with fresh air at all times. The filters used for these systems capture the tiniest of particles to keep them out of my airways. As a result, I often wake up feeling healthy and refreshed. I hope to share the benefits of having filtered air flowing through your home. I will discuss symptoms caused by contaminated air. In addition, I will share information about air filtration maintenance services provided by HVAC contractors.
