Shutting Down Your Heating For The Season: Helpful Hints

Tammy Terry

As you wave goodbye to winter and the balmy breezes of spring arrive, you are probably one of many who will just shut off the heat and not think of it again until fall. While that is all good and well, you should probably consider some heating services now rather than later. Why? Because then you do not have to do them in the fall and you can just turn the heat on and let things run their course. Here are a few helpful hints as you get ready to shut off your heat for the warmer seasons.

Change Your Furnace Filter

Too many people forget to even change the filter during the winter. In fact, you should change it monthly, if you use the cheapest filters, or every two to three months if you buy the more expensive filters. If you buy the latter, you may forget to change the filter as you shut down your heat. This is unfortunate, since your air conditioning actually uses the same ventilation system as your furnace/heat does, which means that you need that clean filter in summer just as much as you do in winter. Before you shut off the heat, change your furnace filter.

Hire an HVAC Contractor to Clean Your Ventilation System

Now is an excellent time to clean your ventilation system. You do not need the heat on, and you do not need to turn on your air conditioning just yet either. The HVAC contractor can get way down into the vents to clear dirt, dust, and debris and make the pathways for circulated air clear. This reduces indoor allergens for the next year, through the warm and cold seasons.

While the Contractor Is There, Have Him/Her Test/Check the Thermostat

Your thermostat is your home's main control system for heating and cooling. Some operate by batteries, while others are wired into another power source. If you hire an HVAC contractor for any of the above services or for other heating and cooling reasons, have him/her check the thermostat to make sure it is in tip-top shape. If it is a much older thermostat, you may want to have it replaced so that it does not become a problem when summer starts or it blows just as winter begins. You may also want him/her to perform some seasonal maintenance on your air conditioner so that you know that that is in working order too. Contact a company like Biggerstaff Plumbing Heating & Air to get started.

About Me
Talking About Air Filtration Systems

Hey everyone, I am Mort Nicholas. Since I have allergies to pollen, dust and chemicals, I must filter the air blowing through my home day and night. The air filtration systems hook straight to the furnace and air conditioner to provide my home with fresh air at all times. The filters used for these systems capture the tiniest of particles to keep them out of my airways. As a result, I often wake up feeling healthy and refreshed. I hope to share the benefits of having filtered air flowing through your home. I will discuss symptoms caused by contaminated air. In addition, I will share information about air filtration maintenance services provided by HVAC contractors.
